WASHINGTON —

U.S. border agents are searching (1+5+7) nearly four times as many international travelers’ smartphones and other electronic devices as they did (2+7) two years ago, expanding the use of a little-known search-and-seizure authority that has sparked (1+4+7) fresh legal challenges from digital rights advocates and defendants in several criminal cases.

The content searches of electronic devices, conducted1 without a warrant or any individualized suspicion, spiked (2+7) during the final year of the Obama administration but have continued (1+4+7) to surge this year as the Trump administration has adopted (1+4+7) extreme vetting of travelers entering the country.

In the first six months of fiscal 2017, which ended (2+7) Sept. 30, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents searched (2+7) the electronic devices of 14,993 arriving international travelers, according to the most recent CBP data.

CBP has not released (1+4+7) data for all of 2017, but unofficial estimates put (1+7) the number of searched devices at 30,000. That compares (1+7) with 19,000 in 2016 and 8,500 in 2015.

1Attention ! "conducted"n'est pas le noyau d'une préposition.C'est un participe passé qui joue un rôle d'adjectif et qui modifie le sens de "The content searches of electronic devices"
