Text

Shortly after The Sixth Sense became (2+7) a global sensation, its director, M Night Shyamalan – hailed(2+7) on the cover of Newsweek in 2002 as “the next Spielberg” – told(2+7) an interviewer that, years earlier, he had realised (2+4+7)the one ingenious trick that made(2+7) Steven Spielberg movies so spectacularly successful. Like a soft-drink manufacturer who had stumbled (2+4+7) on the secret recipe for Coca-Cola, Shyamalan could not believe (2+3+7) his luck. What was(2+7) Spielberg’s killer formula, Shyamalan was asked (2+6+7). He would not say (2+3+7). Merely by understanding it, he had struck (2+4+7) commercial gold and he did not plan(2+7) to share it.

It didn’t quite work out(2+7) that way for Shyamalan, who has never matched (1+4+7) the heights of that first hit. But I thought(2+7) of his imagined revelation as I watched(2+7) Spielberg’s latest film. The Post stars (1+7) Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks as Katharine Graham and Ben Bradlee of the Washington Post, the duo who took(2+7) on the Nixon White House in 1971 to publish the Pentagon Papers, the US Department of Defense’s own secret history of the Vietnam war that laid(2+7) bare decades of government dishonesty.

It is (1+7) a timely, absorbing story, beautifully acted and masterfully told. But what is (1+7) the essential ingredient that makes (1+7) it a Spielberg movie? Where is (1+7) the neat narrative trick that Shyamalan thought(2+7) he had spotted (2+4+7), the trademark device that means (1+7) The Post sits (1+7) in a canon that includes (1+7) Jaws, Indiana Jones and Schindler’s List?
