Adapted from VOA "18th Century Mummies Reveal Clues to Colon Cancer", Rosanne Skirble , March 15, 2016 1:59 PM .

Mummies are providing (Présent/Be>>ing/provide) clues to the evolution of colon cancer.

In 1995, more than 265 mummies were excavated (Passé/Be>>participe passé/excavate) from sealed crypts in the Dominican church in Vac, Hungary. The bodies, identified from their dress as priests and townsfolk, had mummified (Passé/Have>>participe passé/mummify) in the cool and dry conditions for more than 250 years.

An archive of their tissue samples has attracted (Présent/Have>>participe passé/attract) researchers worldwide, including a team from Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine, which has turned (Présent/Have>>participe passé/turn) to the mummies to study the history of colon cancer.

Colon cancer is associated (Présent/Be>>participe passé/associate ) with obesity, physical inactivity and processed foods. Scientists have also identified (Présent/Have>>participe passéidentify /identify) genetic mutations connected with the disease.

The research was led (Passé/Be>>participe passé/lead) by Tel Aviv University microbiologist Rina Arbesfeld of the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology. The scientists hoped (Passé/hope) the mummies' DNA could shed (Passé/Can/shed) light on whether the increase in the "incidence of cancer today is (Présent/be) the result of man's manipulation of nature alone," Arbesfeld said (Passé/say).
